John Duvall left his job at Penfolds making Grange to start his own vineyard in 2003. He has had success from the beginning with his Barossa Valley Shiraz. Both vintages are well regarded: Wine Spectator rated the 2012 vintage a 94, while the Wine Enthusiast rated it 91 and made it a Cellar Selection.

A collaboration between Chateau Ste Michelle and Italy’s famed Piero Antinori, this red is a Washington wine with a Tuscan soul. A Cabernet-based blend, these vintages have typically been rated around 94 by the likes of Dunnuck, Wine Advocate, and Wine Spectator. The 2017, for instance, was rated 97 by Jeb Dunnuck and 96 by James Suckling.

As always, the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Roussanne Vieilles Vignes comes from a three-hectare parcel planted in 1909. Jeb Dunnick says, “You can’t find a wine like this anywhere else in the world, and it’s consistently one of the world’s great white wines,” and he rates it 96-99. The Wine Advocate calls it, “even more impressive than the stunning 2016,” and rates it 97-99.

The winemaker says, “This is a crowning achievement for Vintage American Grower Sparkling Wine.” It was bottle fermented and aged on the yeast for ten years. Wine Spectator calls it rich, Vinous calls it powerful, and both rate it 93.

  • Markham Merlot, two magnums each of 2014, 2015, and 2016; 6 x 1.5 liter

Markham is one of the oldest vineyards in the Napa Valley. It was founded in 1874 and the Stone cellar, still in use today was built in 1879. In 1980 Markham produced its first vintage of Merlot. In 1990 Wine Spectator named Markham the Merlot of the year. The Markham Napa Valley Merlot is actually a Pomerol-style blend. Blends vary from year to year but Merlot always commands the center stage. The 2016 Merlot, for example,  is blended of 85% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Petite Sirah, and 1% Cabernet Franc. It was rated 90 by the Wine Advocate. Each magnum bottle in this lot is signed by Kimberlee Nicholls, one of the first female winemakers in the Napa Valley.

In 1980, BV began a 14-year series of trials in conjunction with UC Davis to identify Cabernet Sauvignon clones best suited to their Rutherford Bench terroir. Two clones (4 and 6) were ultimately selected. Each year, the BV winemakers preserve the unique character of each of these clones in an exclusive very limited bottling. The 2016 Clone 6 was rated 96 by Wine Advocate and 95 by James Suckling, who described it as, “Full-bodied, yet so refined and tight. Lovely length. Beautiful.” 6 magnum bottles.

RWT Shiraz is Penfold’s alternative to the multi-regional sourcing and American oak maturation that are hallmarks of Grange. Instead, RWT is a single-region Barossa Valley Shiraz matured only in French oak. While it is not Grange, it is highly regarded: all of the vintages in this lot are rated at least 97 by a major wine critic. Indeed, Jeb Dunnuck awards the 2016 99 points and says, “The 2016 Shiraz RWT is a brilliant, brilliant wine.”

Over the last 19 years, Schrader Cellars Cabernet Sauvignons have received 21 perfect 100-point ratings from revered critic Robert Parker of The Wine Advocate. The 2015 T6 Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard is one of them. It is produced from a single clone, clone 6, and there are fewer than four acres of clone 6 in the vineyard. Jeb Dunnick says the 2016 T6 is “Flirting with perfection…” and rates it 99. Parker praises its “epic length and depth” and rates it 100. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, 268 cases produced.

The Character is a new release; on Mar. 4, 2021 winemaker Kimberly Nichols said, “The Character represents Markham’s decades-long commitment to wines of character and soil-to-glass sustainability. Being able to craft what we think is the best-of-the-best without constraints allows us to focus on the pleasure and elegance this wine delivers in the glass.”
